Your physiology plays a big role in weight regain.
At Physicians Premiere Weight and Wellness Center in Gainesville, Virginia, we pride ourselves in helping our patients not only lose weight but keep it off long-term. Yet, weight regain is a reality for some.
How often have you arrived at your weight loss goal, only to regain it sometime later? This can be so frustrating! So why does this happen?
Unfortunately, your physiology plays a big part in this. In fact, we are all wired for weight regain.
Factors Influencing Weight Regain
Metabolism: Physiologically speaking, when you lose weight, your metabolism may slow down as your body adapts to your reduced calorie intake. This makes it easier for you to regain weight, especially if you return to your previous eating habits.
Hormones: There are also hormonal changes that occur with weight loss – specifically with your hunger and craving hormones. Unfortunately, you may find that the levels of your hunger and craving hormones increase after you lose weight. This is your body’s way of making you regain weight.
Lack of Physical Activity: Did you know that most people need at least 250 minutes of exercise weekly to keep their weight off? That’s about 50 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. The lack of physical activity significantly influence weight regain by reducing overall caloric expenditure. It also contributes to muscle loss, slowing down your metabolic rate and making it challenging to maintain weight loss.
Poor Eating Habits: Another factor is eating too many calories, too many carbohydrates, and not enough protein. Consuming high-calorie, processed foods that are rich in sugars and fats play a critical role in weight regain. Also, irregular meals and skipping meals can disrupt your body’s metabolism and/or cause unhealthy snacking.
Maintenance of weight is not about depriving yourself. Rather, it is about creating a good balance between exercise, calories, carbohydrates and protein. Thus, it is important for you to work with an experienced weight loss provider to formulate a balance that is not only unique to your needs, but something easy for you to integrate into your lifestyle.
Even though weight regain is common, there are many different tools that can be used to fight this reality. However, it can be tough to do it on your own.
