How to Become a More Mindful Eater

How to Become a More Mindful Eater

Did you know you have a powerful tool with you at all times that can help you attain longer term weight loss success?  It is true and that powerful tool is your mind.

So, what exactly is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a state of being aware. It is a process of observation and attention in light of changing stimuli. If you focus our attention and awareness on the present moment, it can help you disengage from particular habits and behaviors.

That being said, mindful eating is being fully aware of your eating experience. It involves

choosing to eat food that is both pleasing to you and nourishing to your body. It also means acknowledging your responses to food (likes, neutral or dislikes) without judgment. And it is being aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decision about when to begin and stop eating.

So how do you practice mindful eating?

First, accept that your eating experiences are unique to you.

Second, make the conscious choice to direct your awareness to all aspects of food and eating on a moment-by-moment basis.

Third, look at the immediate choices and direct experiences associated with food and eating.

Fourth, be aware of your hunger before, during, and after eating.

And Fifth, take inventory of your insight about how you can act to achieve specific health goals.

Engaging in Mindful Eating practices on a regular basis can help you discover a far more satisfying relationship with food and eating than you ever imagined or experienced before!

Here are some thoughts you can focus on while practicing mindful eating:

  1. I eat slowly and taste each bite.
  2. I put my utensils down between bites.
  3. I prefer eating only when I am hungry.
  4. I love feeling light and energized after I eat.
  5. I feel calm and in charge of myself when I eat mindfully.
  6. I feel confident and self-respecting when I eat mindfully.
  7. I eat food that makes my body happy.
  8. I honor my body.
  9. I honor my emotions rather than stuffing them away with food.

You may think this is a little too simplistic but I cannot over estimate how powerful the tool of mindful eating can be.  I invite you to give it a try – in fact, I invite you to begin today.
